The social welfare in Japan is in the midst of a major transition. "Japanese model werf are society" insists on personal and mutual help. On the other hand, traditional services in the government make much of formal support. In this paper, I discuss support around the family from social support viewpoint and case history. In general, support around the family is divided into three types : support from primary groups, that from agencies and that from volunteer or self-help groups. Support from primary groups emphasized in these days is indispensable to family. But members in primary groups have a tendency to have same socioeconomic status. In poor family, for example, members cannot offer an effective information each other. And even emotional support from primary groups becomes indebted to a recipient when the reciprocity is not realised. On the other hand, It is impossible to hope much support from volunteer or self-help groups under present conditions. Social workers must examine support of each types around a client and try to it in order for a client.
