By some symbolic features, they are ritualized and distinguished from other of verbal interaction. When the fact once become accepted, they often function as the indirect social control. This indirectness derives from the metaphorical process which most of genres utilize. Folklore is not an absurd tradition but requires its prorer rules of interpretation.
