Recently I have begun to be more aware of the importance and variety of what J.-J. Rousseau (1712-1778) wrote before 1749. Renewed inquiry into the writings of young Rousseau seems necessary to a better comprehension of his later works. But very few readers have paid serious attention to the earlier fragments on history, religion and education; the poems and the long letters to his friends. In these papers, therefore, I try to study these fragmental writings from 1735 to 1742. The vicissitudes of those years are narrated in Books V, VI of the "Confessions." Within this seven years span, two places are decisive in its influence on the intellectual and emotional development of young Rousseau : Les Charmettes and Lyon. The former is the symbol of the lost paradise of man as he moves from nature to society. Rousseau would like to remember the time of Les Charmettes as a heaven of happiness, for it was a time of solitude, of manual work in the garden as well as of intensive work of the mind. The latter was the large city where the opulence of civilization and commerce was displayed. There he taught two children as their tutor and made "project" and "memo" of remarkable value.
