This study investigated the effect of different backplate positions on the kinematics of the lower limb joints during the swim start and compared the starting techniques of national and non-national level swimmers. Seven male swimmers performed starts from three positions: Front, Preferred, and Back. Kinematic variables, including block time, entry time, 10m time, take-off velocity, and take-off angle, were analyzed. The Back position resulted in the shortest 10m time (p<0.05) and a more horizontal take-off angle, whereas no significant differences were observed in the block and entry times. Elite swimmers adapted better to backplate variations by adjusting their hip angles and center of mass, whereas non-elite swimmers exhibited earlier front leg hip extension, potentially reducing force application. Rear leg hip angles also influenced propulsion and take-off direction. These findings suggest that optimization of backplate position based on individual characteristics can enhance the start performance. Future research should examine upper-body coordination and anthropometric factors for improved training strategies.
