Abstract |
This research is conducted to gain the popularity of Futsal, a s port widely spread in the world as well as in Japan, through its historical development in Japan. Another objective is to explain and describe the current circumstances of Futsal in Japan and come up with solutions to problems that exist in Japan and to direct the developing movement Futsal in Japan.
Futsal was founded in Uruguay. It was derived from soccer which had tremendous popularity at that time. It has been said that the origins of Futsal comes from Juan Carlos Ceriani, who was a leader at the YMCA (Young Men's Christianity Association). He used the rules of basketball, handball and water polo to create the rules of this indoor soccer game. This sport quickly spread to countries in South America and the rules were formalized in Brazil.
This indoor soccer game gained global popularity in the 1960s. FIFUSA was established in 1971 and the first worldchampionships were held in Brazil in 1982. FIFA quickly realized that indoor soccer could be established as an individual sport and included indoor soccer into its scope. In 1994, FIFA changed the rules of this 5 a side indoor soccer game and named this game Futsal.
Futsal in Japan has been developing rapidly in the 1990s. In its earliest years Futsal was used as a training method for soccer and the rules differed between areas, but recently, Japan Futsal Federation has worked to formalize the rules and nationally organize the sport. By this movement, players will be able to enjoy the sport more casually and safely. Futsal is known for its casualness and therefore is thought to be spread throughout Japan as life long sport, community sport and family sport. However, in order to spread Futsal as a competitive sport, training of coaches, development of local leagues, national league and the strengthening of the national team is inevitable.
