Although the importance of combining knowledge from Modern Family Studies and Ie Studies has been highlighted, it still remains a serious problem. The aim of this study was to re-examine the emotional relations of the family and their relationship with modernity in both fields, and show the problems associated with new empirical studies. To date, the emotional relations of the family have been considered to be a characteristic of the "Modern Family ; " however, descriptions of the emotional relations within the family are also present in Ie Studies. However, the positioning of emotional relations and modernity as well as the meaning of the latter differ markedly between the two fields.
This research clarified the positioning of the emotional relations of the family as a characteristic of the "Modern Family." This concept was taken up by Modern Family Studies, with Ie Studies, positioning the emotional relations of the family as a characteristic of the premodern community, which does not permit separation of the "Individual."
The conclusion, while based on the limitations of the document in both fields, presents the intersection between Modern Family Studies and Ie Studies, and the problems associated with new empirical studies on both substantive and philosophical levels.
