In a rapidly aging Japanese society, where and how the elderly should live has emerged as a social issue. Although some believe that shared housing is a viable option, the norm of living with one's family may constrain the growth of shared living and its acceptance in Japan, because people tend to view living with outsiders as undesirable making them feel unenthusiastic and reluctant.
Based on their personal narratives, this study analyzes why the elderly living in shared housing have chosen such a way of living. From the evidence, it was observed that they had developed a desire to live with someone after their form of residence changed from living with family members to living alone. In addition, the networks of personal contacts had a key role in introducing shared housing to the elderly. This study concludes that developing regional networks is important in promoting shared housing for the elderly to the Japanese public.
