Abstract |
The door of the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan for tourists was opened in 1974. Bhutan's tourism has been developed prosperously with the fixed tour tariff under their unique policy of 'high yield and low volume.' This core component of the policy is to ensure a sustainable environmental and cultural carrying capacity in the small Himalayan country.
Tourism has emerged as one of Bhutan's leading industries in recent years but the benefit has been remained only for the western part of Bhutan. Now for the economical development of eastern and southern Bhutan, the government is planning to promote tourism in these regions. Merak and Sakteng, located in the easternmost part of Bhutan, the remote settlements of Brokpas, a distinct ethnic group of seminomadic people as prime tourist destinations which could help increase the number of repeat visitors to the country and create a new trekking product featuring the ethnic diversity of Bhutan. The government is planning to introduce "carefully" the Community Based Tourism to the region soon.
This paper aims to reconsider the reason why this region is focused in tourism context and indicate the problems. In addition, I will try to consider the socio-cultural change of Brokpas which towards transition and might be appeared through the tourism in future.
