Abstract |
There has been the increase in interest in the body. Having been affected by Cartesian thought, sociology has followed along time tradition in accepting a mind-body dichotomy. This mind-body dualism associates with a Cartesian thinking. This has an influence on the sociological approach to the body. The body has been something of an "absent presence" in sociology. To establish "the sociology of the body", we need to challenge to this dualism inherent in Cartesian thinking and in sociology.
In this paper, I am going to show that the absence of the body in sociology is a result of the failure in grasping works of Descartes. Descartes refers to the union of mind and body as the "primitive notion". I shall give attention to this notion in grasping the body. It is the relation between sociology and works of Descartes that should be examined and renewed.
I think the union of mind and body as the "primitive notion", is relates to "the basic body". There are some theories which focus on "the basic body". The sociological theory of the body, which could cover "the basic body", is socially and theoretically needed. But, we do not need to take "the basic body", as a fixed and substantial one. If we do so, we would follow in our superiors steps. We shall take "the basic body" as the image. My approach towards the image of "the basic body" will leads to "the sociology of the body". To do so, we must first return toworks of Descartes. And this will also leads to the renewal of the sociological thinking. I shall do this trial from the perspective immanent in sociology.
