Abstract |
Learning IPA symbols and the relevant concepts (place of articulation, manner of articulation and voicing contrasts) is a crucial component of introductory phonetics education. However, for some undergraduate students, remembering different places of articulation, for example, can present a learning challenge, potentially making phonetics a "boring" subject to study. To lessen this problem, we have developed IPA cards. With these, students can play with IPA, just as they play with regular cards; through this process they can familiarize themselves with IPA. This paper describes what our IPA cards are like, and reports specific IPA card games that they can play in class to learn IPA symbols.
