【目的】公共図書館において実現されている高齢者の社会参加を，八王子市中央図書館がデザインした高齢者向けプログラムの参加者が自主的に作ったエッセイの会の実際の活動場面の分析を通じて明らかにすることである。さらにこの解明を通じて，高齢者の社会参加への公共図書館の関わりについて考察する。
【方法】エッセイの会の会合においてフィールドワークを実施し，参与観察並びに録音によるデータ収集を行なった。収集したデータをもとに，エスノメソドロジーのアプローチを用いて，エッセイの会での議論の場面における実際の行為を分析し記述した。
【結果】分析の結果，エッセイの会の会合における議論では，文献調査に限定されないエッセイの発表を通した広い意味での「知識の共有」をきっかけとして議論が発展し，参加者がそれぞれの知識を共有し合うだけでなく，経験したことのない場面を想像したり，相反する知識の交通整理をしたりしていることが，実際の会合場面のインタラクションの分析を通して明らかになった。また，公共図書館の役割として，高齢者の社会参加に向けた「初動のきっかけ作り」と「仲間づくりの機会の提供」，「自主的活動を許容する機会の提供」をプログラムとしてデザインすることが重要であることが示唆された。これにより，公共図書館が高齢者の社会参加を支える場として機能し得る可能性が確認された。
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to clarify how social participation among older adults is being realized in public libraries by analyzing the actual activities of the “Essay Group,” which was independently formed by participants in a program specifically designed for older adults by the Hachioji Central Library. Furthermore, through this analysis, the study aims to examine the role of public libraries in fostering and supporting social participation among older adults.
Methodology: Fieldwork was conducted during the Essay Group’s meetings, with participant observation and audio recordings employed as data collection methods. Using the ethnomethodological approach, the collected data were analyzed to understand the actual interactions that occurred during the group’s discussions.
Findings: The analysis revealed that discussions during the meetings of the Essay Group were initiated and developed through a broad concept of “knowledge sharing,” facilitated by the presentation of essays that went beyond the scope of mere literature reviews. An interactional analysis of the meeting dynamics demonstrated that the participants not only exchanged their individual knowledge but also engaged in imagining scenarios outside their personal experiences and reconciling conflicting perspectives. Furthermore, the findings highlight the pivotal role of public libraries in fostering social participation among older adults by designing programs that provide “initial triggers for engagement,” “opportunities for building social connections,” and “opportunities that allow for autonomous activities.” These findings underscore the potential of public libraries to serve as essential spaces for fostering and supporting the social participation of older adults.
