Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the future direction of university library services by conducting a survey on forecasted library service expenditures for the next 10 years at university libraries around the world.
Methods: The survey was conducted from July to November 2005. A total of 748 university libraries with collections of 1,000,000 volumes or more in 66 countries, were invited to participate in the survey by e-mail. The respondents used an online form to answer questions on expectations about expenditures over the next 10 years in the 12 service fields included in the questionnaire. Responses were received from 105 universities in approximately 20 countries, a response rate of 14.0% .
Results: Many respondents considered “provision of external scholarly resources in electronic format” and “provision of internal resources to external cliants” to be important fields of service over the next 10 years.
