The concept of information has traditionally been treated from two points of view: one assumes that information is a "thing" and the other assumes that it is a "non-thing" (typically, a process). To this point, no approach has attempted to unify these two stances. In this article, I define the concept of information as non-thing, but I also show how information can also be seen as a thing. The article also includes a comparison of my definition of the concept of information with some traditional definitions. In addition, I discuss the necessity of investigating various terms that include the word "information" which are used in library and information science, such as information retrieval and information use.
これまで、「情報」概念は2つの捉え方をされてきた: 情報をモノとして捉える立場とモノではないという立場である。両者を統一的に捉えることはまだ行われていない。本稿では、「情報」はモノではないという立場から、「情報」概念を定義し、同時に、なぜモノのようにみえることもあるのかを説明した。さらに、筆者の「情報」概念の定義と、これまでの代表的な「情報」 概念の定義との比較を行った。また、情報検索や情報利用など図書館情報学における種々の「情報」を冠する用語の検討が必要であることを指摘した。
