This article reports issues of English-Medium Instruction (EMI) classes with students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds focusing on Sociology I: Comparative Sociology of Education, one of the GIC courses held at Keio University. The aim of this article is (1) to present an overview of the classes and class procedures, (2) to identify and discuss the issues and challenges based on the results of student course evaluation questionnaires prepared by the instructor conducted in academic years 2022 and 2023, and (3) to report the support for the faculty and students provided by the Center for Global Interdisciplinary Courses and to discuss the needs of faculty teaching and students taking EMI classes. By analyzing the results of student course evaluation questionnaires, this article examines the challenges of meeting the varied needs of students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds in EMI classes in the current Japanese university education system. The findings suggest that the effective implementation of EMI requires the examination of issues which make such implementation difficult at multiple levels, including the national, university and class.
