In this practice, 42 basic sounds of Jolly Phonics, an integrative phonics system, were taught through band activities in each hourly class. Jolly Phonics has been introduced in many schools in the UK to help students acquire the correspondence between sounds and letters, which is an important foundation for learning English. This learning method has a set teaching sequence of review, stories, actions, letter practice, sound comprehension, blending and dictation. There are examples of its use in elementary schools in Japan, but few in junior high schools. To assess its effectiveness, students completed the same task before and six months after the study. Additionally, English vocabulary and grammar outcomes were compared with those of students in previous years who had not been taught using Jolly Phonics. Based on these results, along with student questionnaires, this paper examines the impact of introducing multisensory Jolly Phonics in junior high school English classes.
