This study conducted an inter-grade exchange between second and third-year students in a public junior high school English class. A soft CLIL approach was incorporated by having third-year students explain to second-year students about a recent school trip and second-year students’ questions about it. Subsequently, a performance task about working at school, and learning activities, was carried. The aim of this study was to improve the English language skills and motivation of second and third-year students who worked together at events and club activities.
Although there was a sense of otherness between students from different grades, a finding not seen in interactions with ALTs, unfortunately, there was no improvement in English language skills or motivation for learning. The discussion of why there was no perceived improvement is detailed below through analysis of a student questionnaire and other data. Ideas for future studies are discussed.
