Abstract |
In many German universities, Taiwanese professors and lecturers teach the Chinese language. This is partly because many German universities have accepted Taiwanese lecturers dispatched by the ROC (Republic of China) government's Chinese language teacher dispatch program, which has served as an extension of the strong links between West Germany and the ROC that existed during the Cold War. These teachers have received special training in Taiwan which allows them to teach standardized Chinese Mandarin.
At the same time, however, they do not hesitate to teach Taiwanese-specific vocabulary and pronunciation in intermediate- and higher-level Chinese classes. For many years, these teachers have been using online tools in their classes, and once the COVID-19 pandemic led to fully online learning, they moved to further develop various remote teaching methods. These methods will likely remain in use even after the pandemic is over.
Students in Japan should also be taught a diverse range of Chinese language variants spoken in different regions, harnessing Chinese language education in Germany as a reference. Using online tools is an effective method of promoting this goal.
