The present study examined the influence of the interoception, the perception of internal body states, on emotion recognition and regulation. Two studies were conducted.
The first study was an examination of the relationship between the level of alexithymia and interoception. Alexithymia is a personality tendency consisting of difficulties in identifying emotions, describing emotions and external orientation of thought. Higher levels of this tendency are thought to co-occur with poor recognition of changes in physical activity associated with emotions, making people more likely to develop stress-related physical symptoms. The way in which interoception mediates this association has received increasing attention in recent years. In the present study, the level of alexithymia, interoceptive accuracy, elaboration of emotional concepts and ability to abstract non-emotional concepts were investigated and their associations were assessed. The results showed that higher alexithymia levels were associated with lower interoceptive accuracy. Furthermore, it was found to be associated with lower ability to understand emotions and abstract concepts. This finding indicates that the problem of emotion recognition in alexithymia stems from the processing of interoceptive information and suggests that the problem of ambiguous contextual information and the ability to represent internal body states as emotions should also be considered.
The second study examined the influence of interoception in mood and emotion associated with fluctuations in menstrual cycles. Fluctuations in the menstrual cycle are known to cause significant changes in the body's endocrine and autonomic nervous systems, as well as affecting the perception and control of emotions such as sadness and anger. However, there are large individual differences, and the relationship between these individual differences and the interoception was investigated. The results showed that individuals who were more likely to refer to their physical state when evaluating their own emotions felt greater fluctuations in their emotions due to the menstrual cycle. This relationship was also associated with the intensity of sympathetic nervous system activity.
The focus on and implementation of the above two research topics was the result of joint research between psychology and psychiatry, and the findings are also beneficial to the two disciplines.
