High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a treatment method that non-invasively destroys cancer cells. This treatment method is widely expected for the treatment of cancer, which currently ranks as the leading cause of death domestically. Especially, this treatment method, which uses ultrasound without the need for surgical scalpels, is anticipated as a treatment method of the near future. However, the number of ultrasonic emission elements in the currently commercialized treatment devices is insufficient in terms of resolution for accurately focusing on the precise location of the lesion. This project aims to prototype a high-resolution array-type ultrasonic transceiver combining synthetic aperture and integrated circuit technology, with the goal of demonstrating ultrasonic focusing.
Last fiscal year, the system design of a 64-channel control system was completed, with the manufacturing of a dedicated circuit board and the mounting of components, followed by a successful operation check. The designed control system allows for the setting of arbitrary delay times for the ultrasonic transducer, and it has been confirmed that the prototype system functions correctly. This confirmation demonstrates that ultrasonic beamforming works by appropriately controlling these delay times. Moreover, image acquisition was conducted using an ultrasonic phantom purchased with this budget, confirming the possibility of detecting small foreign objects using φ0.1 mm nylon monofilaments. However, due to the limitations of the array-type transducer's size, the resolution in the radial direction has decreased. To improve this issue, the use of a transducer with a larger aperture is desired. The prototype system and its operational results were presented at the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan Electronic Circuits Society.
For image re-synthesis, proprietary software utilizing the k-wave library on MATLAB was independently developed. This software allows for the comparison of experimentally acquired images with simulated images, serving to validate new ultrasonic irradiation algorithms.
