Loneliness have long been social problems in many countries around the world, including Japan. But is loneliness a "problem" that should always be solved? And what exactly is the state of "coexistence" that is supposed to replace loneliness? In addition, how have loneliness and coexistence been depicted in the realms of literature and art? In order to examine these issues from various angles, we invited researchers and practitioners who have been conducting research on loneliness and coexistence to give lectures. For example, the lectures by researchers who studies literature critically examined the discourse on overcoming loneliness through "bonding (kizuna)," and showed that loneliness can be a driving force for personal growth and creativity. The lecture also included a discussion of what it means to care for those who suffer from loneliness. Cultural anthropologists who has been conducting field research in Okinawa, Central and South America, and Africa, explained that a specific technique is necessary for solitude, that it is cultivated in the process of socialization, and that in order to achieve coexistence, one must be willing to disclose negative aspects of oneself and gossip frequently about one's neighbors, which are negatively perceived in today's Japanese society. In the lecture by sociologists, it was pointed out that enjoying solitude in today's world requires a certain level of income, and the type of communication that should be sought when helping those who suffer from loneliness was also discussed. Through the various lectures, various issues surrounding "loneliness" that Japanese society and the world are facing today became clear, and the lecturers were able to deepen our understanding of the fundamental question of how people can confront themselves, build relationships with others, and live together in harmony.
