The circulation of the atmospheres and oceans of terrestrial planets, including Venus, differs greatly depending on each parameter regime. On Venus, which rotates slowly, superrotation is prevalent above the cloud layer, while localized currents such as the jet stream and the Kuroshio Current are prevalent in the Earth's atmosphere and oceans. The goal of this research is to understand the dynamics of this terrestrial planet's flow and its controllability.
While observations of the Earth's atmosphere are extensive and data assimilation provides highly reliable weather forecasts, observations of the Earth's oceans and Venus are limited, and research using data assimilation is still insufficient. This research aims to utilize observations by the Venus climate orbiter “Akatsuki” and ocean vessels, and also develop the data assimilation methods.
This year, in addition to improving the atmospheric general circulation model for Venus (AFES-Venus) and the Earth's atmospheric regional model, which we have developed so far, we also developed an ocean regional model for Tokyo Bay. We also attempted to combine data assimilation method with a regional model of the Earth's atmosphere and ocean, making use of our experience in developing the first Venus data assimilation system (ALEDAS-V).
First, in the Venusian atmosphere, we investigated the cause of the cold collar reproduced in the Akatsuki analysis data, and revealed that meridional circulation enhanced by thermal tides causes the heating of the polar vortex. In addition, an observation system simulation experiment to reproduce cold collar using cross link radio occultation by small cube satellites showed that cold collar can be reproduced with just three satellites. Furthermore, we conducted an observation system simulation experiment with the goal of reproducing short-period planetary-scale Rossby waves, and found observation conditions that could be reproduced using ultraviolet camera image observation. Regarding the Earth's atmosphere, we conducted a statistical investigation of clear-air turbulence over Japan. In addition, in the Earth’s Ocean, we conducted test calculations for an experiment to reproduce ocean currents in Tokyo Bay.
These results were published in three peer-reviewed papers in English journals, and were presented in numerous domestic and international research conferences. We are also currently submitting and preparing multiple papers.
