I tried to investigate the characteristics of the Jesuit mission in East Asia. This year's topic was to consider how the Jesuit mission to Japan, particularly Francis Xavier's early missions to Japan, made an impact on the Jesuit missions in general. For an example I focused on Antonio Vieira, a Portuguese Jesuit in the 17th century, and examined the influence that the Jesuit mission to Japan had on other regions. Vieira worked as a diplomat in European countries in the first half of the 17th century, and as a missionary in Brazil in the second half. He was greatly influenced by Xavier's missionary works in Japan, and he attempted to construct a theory of mystical missionary work based on Xavier's charisma. His collections of sermons, "Sleeping Xavier, Awakening Xavier" (Lisbon, 1694), is the culmination of his theories on Xavier. I traced the changes in Vieira's thoughts regarding Xavier up until that point, based on his correspondence, other writings and sermons. Vieira had been prosecuted by the Inquisition in Coimbra because of being a "new Christian" who had converted from Judaism. This gives us a glimpse of the relationship between the Jesuits and the Inquisition. In order to understand Vieira's thought, we must understand not only the characteristic of missionary works in Portugal and Brazil, but also those in East Asia, mainly Japan. In particular, it is necessary to understand how the mystical aspects of Xavier, who is said to have performed miracles such as making the dead resurrected during his lifetime, were received in the European Catholic world. In the future, I would like to develop a comparative theory between Japan and other regions through discussions on missionary works like this. Apart from this theme, I also introduced an overview of pre-modern Japan-related materials conserved in the Vatican Library and Archive. I attempted to explore the characteristics of Japan's missionary works, focusing on Jesuit historical materials such as “Barreto's Manuscript" and Pedro Gómez's "Compendium". We would also like to continue comparing this with other regions in East Asia, including China.
