本研究の目的は、日本の近代化に先導的役割を担った邦人派遣留学生たちが、当時どのような形で分布したのか、その状況を調査・把握することで、欧州における人の移動の軌跡を可視化し、その人的ネットワークの構築プロセスを探究しようとするものである。ドイツ語圏の大学資料館に分散する19世紀後半の学籍簿関連資料、特に邦人留学生の登録データの一次資料の所在を確認し、データベースを充実させるための調査を実施した。本研究の基盤となるデータは、構築データ格納数6785件に及ぶ。本研究では、これら位置情報を含む、住所および当時の番地の資料を手がかりに、ArcGIS Proを用いたジオコーディングを通して留学生の分散・集中の状況を可視化した。本研究の独自性は、現地でデータベース化されていない当時の邦人留学生たちの履修科目登録帳(Studienbuch)、博士論文の審査委員会による見解書 (Gutachten)、登録証明書に手書きで添え書きされたメモテキストをデジタルデータとして収集し、これまで見えてこなかったメタデータを明示的に示したことにある。これにより、個別の留学生の辿ったキャリア形成が、留学生同士の人的ネットワーク形成に紐づくことを指摘した。本研究の独自性は地理的空間情報を可視化するために使用されArcGISシステムを研究手法に適用した点おいても重要であると考える。
The aim of this study is to examine the situation of Japanese students who were sent from Japan to European countries during the Meiji period and played a leading role in Japan's modernization. This study attempted to visualize the movement of these students in Europe and explore the process of building personal networks. We conducted research to confirm the locations of primary data, especially registration data of Japanese students, in the archives of universities in the German-speaking region from the second half of the 19th century and to expand the database. The basis of this study consists of over 6785 records. Using ArcGIS Pro, we visualized the distribution and concentration of exchange students based on address and street information. The uniqueness of this study lies in collecting digital data from sources that were not recorded in databases at the time, such as course registrations ("Studienbuch"), evaluations of doctoral theses, and handwritten notes on registration certificates. This allowed us to make explicit the metadata that was previously not discernible. This also enabled us to point out that the career development of individual exchange students is connected to the formation of personal networks among them. The uniqueness of this study also lies in the application of the ArcGIS system to visualize geographic spatial data in our research methodology.
