Japan is aiming to realize carbon neutral by 2050, and is planning to introduce a large amount of wind power generation in the future. Unlike Europe, where there are constant westerly winds, in Japan, the pitch angle of the blades in a wind turbine is changed to match the frequently changing wind direction for keeping the rotational torque constant. Instead of such mechanical pitch angle control, the following device has been proposed. A cylinder containing a fluid with electrical conductivity such as liquid metal is installed around the turbine shaft, and a magnetic field is applied in the axial direction of the shaft to generate torque. The device obtains electrical output while controlling.
A fluid is filled between the inner and outer cylinders and drives only by the rotating inner cylinder has long been known as Taylor-Couette flow, and has been used in research on turbulent flow transitions and in engineering applications for material mixing. When the fluid is an electrically conductive fluid such as a liquid metal and the strength of the magnetic field applied in the axial direction is changed, the Lorentz force in the opposite direction to the flow is generated and turbulence is suppressed. It is known that a turbulent flow structure called a high-speed/low-speed streak that is elongated in the flow direction occurs near the inner cylinder, but it is unknown how the streak changes depending on the magnetic field strength.
In this study, we investigated the physical phenomena of the magnethydrodynamnics (MHD) in double cylinder flow (Taylor-Couette flow) by using numerical calculations. As a result, the following was revealed. As the magnetic field strength increases, the streaks extending in the azimuthal direction are suppressed, and high-speed streaks extending diagonally from the upper and lower walls toward the center clearly appear. At this time, a quasi-two-dimensional vortex having axes in the axial direction is formed in the channel. Furthermore, increasing the magnetic field strength also suppresses the high-speed streak. Near the inner cylinder, where no magnetic field is applied, there are disturbances from the inner cylinder wall and disturbances from the upper and lower walls, but we succeeded in separating and understanding these by applying a magnetic field.
