「私はあなたの意見には反対だが、あなたがそれを主張する権利を死んでも擁護する」という言はたびたびヴォルテールのものとされるが、実際にはE. B.ホールというイギリス人作家がヴォルテールに関する著作の中で、ヴォルテールの表現の自由に関する考えを"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"と要約したものであり、ヴォルテール本人の言ではない。
本研究は、どのようにこの言が日本で誤って受容され、展開されたのかを研究するものである。
研究期間中、日本語の戦前、戦中、戦後の文献検索の中で、左派雑誌で引用されるなどしてきたことがわかったとともに、ヴォルテールがC-A.エルヴェシウスへの手紙のなかでこのように書いたとする誤解を含んだ引用が見つかった。
また、引用がどのように行われるのかなどを理解する上で、アダプテーションに関する研究に基づき、研究の理論的枠組みの構築に注力した。
さらに、この研究の発展のために、小泉勇人氏（東京工業大学）および茂木謙之介氏（東北大学）を招き、研究会を開催した。そこでは、それぞれによるアダプテーションの理解や具体的な研究方法・調査方法などについての意見交換を行い、より広い研究範囲に関わる共同研究の可能性について話し合った。
ヨーロッパへの渡航費の高騰により資金不足が生じ、当初予定していたフランスにおける調査ができなかったため、今後他の研究費により今回の計画で充分に遂行できなかった点を補いたい。
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it," often attributed to Voltaire, is actually a summary by E. B. Hall, a British writer, in a work about Voltaire's ideas on freedom of expression. It is not a direct quote from Voltaire himself.
This research aims to examine how this quote was mistakenly attributed and disseminated in Japan. During the research period, it was found that the quote appeared in left-wing magazines and there were misconceptions about Voltaire's supposed statement to C.-A. Helvetius in a letter.
Furthermore, drawing from studies on adaptation to understand how quotations are utilized, the research focused on establishing a theoretical framework. Additionally, to advance this research, a seminar was held with invited speakers Yuuto Koizumi (Tokyo Institute of Technology) and Ken'nosuke Motegi (Tohoku University). During the seminar, there was an exchange of ideas on understanding adaptation and specific research and survey methods, discussing the potential for collaborative research on a broader scope.
Due to a shortage of funds caused by the soaring travel expenses to Europe, the planned investigation in France could not be carried out as initially intended. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement the points that could not be sufficiently addressed in this project with funding from other sources.
