2023年度は、3年間のプロジェクトの1年目として、トリニダード出身のイギリスの小説家サミュエル・セルヴォンについて研究をおこった。セルヴォンの作品のなかから現時点で絶版となっていない小説はすべて入手し検討しつつ、書籍やCDを購入して、20世紀半ばのイギリスの黒人文化をめぐる状況を調査した。
この研究を通じて、トリニダードのカリプソという大衆音楽の形式がセルヴォンの文体におよぼした影響、そしてセルヴォンのテクストがそうした大衆文化を西洋的モダニズムと結びつけることであらたな形式をつくり出したことを、あらためて確認することができた。セルヴォンは語りの文体に文法的に破格なトリニダード・クレオール英語を用いており、それによって生み出されるリズムはカリプソを連想させるのだが、同時にセルヴォンのテクストにはT・S・エリオットやチャールズ・ディケンズといったイギリスの作家たちがロンドンを描いた際に用いた特徴的な語彙が挟まれる。こうした混淆的な文体には、当時のイギリスが植民地からの移民の波を経験しながら新たな国民的アイデンティティを模索していた状況が刻み込まれている。
まだこの研究プロジェクトの成果は口頭発表・出版ともにおこなっていないが、2024年3月にはセルヴォンの代表作の小説The Lonely Londonersの翻訳を完了しており、4月の段階では第3稿を検討中である。この日本語版は2024年夏頃に出版される予定である。その際、この研究プロジェクトの成果をまとめた詳しい訳者解説をつける。この出版企画は、日本のイギリス文学研究においてこれまでほとんど見過ごされてきたイギリス黒人文学史の研究の潮流をつくることに貢献できると考えている。当初の予定より遅れてしまったが、この翻訳により見えてきたこの作品の特徴を論じた英語論文を、英語圏の学術誌に投稿する予定である。
In the 2023 academic year, as the first year of a three-year project, my research focused on the Trinidadian-British novelist Samuel Selvon. I obtained and examined all of Selvon's works that were still widely available. I also purchased books and CDs to investigate the situation of black culture in mid-20th century Britain.
Through this research, I could confirm once again how calypso, a Trinidadian popular musical form, influenced Selvon's writing style, as well as how Selvon's texts created a new form by combining this form of popular music with Western modernist literary style. Selvon uses Trinidadian Creole English in his narrative, the rhythms of which instantaneously remind the readers of calypso. However, Selvon's text also contains characteristic vocabulary used by British writers such as T.S. Eliot and Charles Dickens in their depictions of London. This mixed writing style encapsulates the situation in which Britain at the time was searching for a new national identity while experiencing waves of immigration from the colonies.
Although I have not yet presented or published the results of this research project, in March 2024, I finished translating Selvon's seminal novel The Lonely Londoners into Japanese. As of April 2024, I am working on the third draft of the translated text. The Japanese version of the novel will be published in the summer of 2024. This volume will contain my detailed discussion of the novel, summarizing the findings I obtained throughout this research project. This publication project will contribute to creating a trend in the study of the history of black British literature, which has been largely overlooked in the study of British literature in Japan. I am going to write an English-language article that discusses the issues I found through translating Selvon's novel and submit it to a peer-reviewed academic journal in either the US or the UK.
