Funded by Keio Gijuku Academic Development Funds, this study recorded (publicly available under certain conditions) and analyzed pronunciation classes conducted by a Japanese instructor of Chinese (referred to as "the instructor" hereafter). Through the analysis process, the following conclusions were drawn:
Conclusion 1: The instructor explained Chinese pronunciation in Japanese and shared her extensive experience and skills in acquiring Chinese phonetics with students. Regarding comprehension level, students showed a positive attitude toward the pronunciation classes. However, some students expressed the following opinion: “Even though the instructor's explanations were clear, there were times when I still didn't fully understand, and I couldn't immediately apply knowledge to use." Thus, it has been understood that the difficulty level of these pronunciation classes is high, and seems to be challenging for students as well.
Conclusion 2: Compared to traditional teaching methods, the instructor's method has the following characteristics. Firstly, the instructor is an author of specialized books on pronunciation education and she is also an expert in Chinese phonetic education. Secondly, the instructor can effectively explain the causes of common pronunciation errors. Thirdly, the instructor employs several unique teaching techniques.
Conclusion 3: Generally, students demonstrate a positive attitude towards introducing such pronunciation classes at Keio University. Reasons for recommendation include 1) the uniqueness of the training in classical poetry; 2) the specialized explanations of IPA and articulatory organs; 3) the distinctive explanations of aspirated and unaspirated sounds; 4) the effectiveness of intensive training on retroflex sounds; 5) the usefulness of the instructor' learning experiences; 6) the cultivation of a habit of constant reflection on one's pronunciation; and 7) the innovativeness of the classical poetry recitation tests. However, students also raised some concerns: 1) this teaching method is only suitable for small classes and it takes a considerable amount of time to fully digest the content. 2) specialized knowledge is abundant and there is a rather high volume of pronunciation practice. 3) the materials themselves demand a high level of pronunciation from the instructor. And 4) some explanations appear to be the subject of debate. Despite the challenges associated with implementing the classes, it is believed to be worth attempting.
