本研究は、2002年から2022年における日本の2つの幼稚園（東京都にあるまどか幼稚園と京都府にある小松谷保育園）の在り方に焦点をあてる。この20年間で1）何が変わり、2）何が継続されているのか。この2点の研究課題解明を目的とする。20年、40年にわたる縦断研究は稀で、1982年、2002年、2022年と3時点での同じ幼稚園のデータそのものが貴重である。長期的な観点からは、2022年の幼児教育の実態を記録に残すというのも目的の１つである。
まず、２つの幼稚園でビデオ撮影を行い、園生活の通常の1日の流れを反映した20分のビデオを作製する。その後、その20分のビデオを使い、幼児教育者にインタビューを行う。ビデオを使ったインタビュー法 (“Video-cued multivocal ethnography”) による調査を実施して、上記2点の解明を目指す。ビデオを使ったインタビュー法とは、研究協力者に、口述のみで質問をするのではなく、ビデオを見せながらインタビューを進める方法である。時間の経過が絡むテーマでは、口述のみでの質問は研究協力者を困惑させることが多い。ビデオという視覚情報を使うことで、具体的な場面を提供することができ、研究協力者の深層に迫ることができる。
2年間の研究期間を計画し、今年度は2年目であった。まどか幼稚園の1日の流れを反映した20分間のビデオ作製し、そのビデオを使い8月にまどか幼稚園の幼稚園教諭へのインタビューを実施した。小松谷保育園・まどか幼稚園での幼児教育者へのインタビューから、この20年間で実践においては継続されているものが多いことがわかった。また、9月にイギリスで開催されたthe 29th Reconceptualising Early Childhood Education Conference にて、韓国で開催されたthe 12th KSECE International ConferenceのPresidential Invited Talk にて、本研究のこれまでの結果を発表した。1月には新潟県の幼稚園にて、3月にはアメリカアリゾナ州の幼稚園にて、作製したビデオを使い幼稚園教諭と専門家へのインタビューを行った。今後、文字起こしが終了次第、データ分析を開始し、論文執筆に取り掛かる予定である。
This is an ethnographic study of a daycare center, Komatsudani Hoikuen, in Kyoto, and of a preschool, Madoka Yochien, in Tokyo. The research question is straightforward: “What has been changed or not changed over the last 20 years, from 2002 to 2022, at Komatsudani Hoikuen (daycare center) and Madoka Yochien (preschool)?”
Komatsudani Hoikuen and Madoka Yochien are both preschools featured in Preschool in Three Cultures Studies (1989 & 2009). Preschool in Three Cultures Revisited (Tobin, Hsueh, & Karasawa, 2009) focused on continuity and change in early childhood education systems in three countries over a period of twenty years from 1982 to 2002. This study, Preschool in Three Eras in Japan, is similar in many ways but has two important differences: One, this study focuses on only Japanese preschool. Two, this study is going to look at three eras, three eras comparisons, rather than two time periods.
The research team in 1982 and 2002 made videos showing typical days in preschool classrooms. This study will add one more video, in 2022, then conduct interviews using these videos shot in three different eras. This study is also a visual ethnography of preschool from a long-term perspective and as such, it will be a very important archive of Japanese preschools.
This is a two-year planed research project. During the second year, I finished editing the Madoka Yochien footage and conducted the interviews using that edited video with the teachers at Madoka Yochien. From those interviews at Komatsudani Hoikuen and Madoka Yochien, I’ve found that there is a great continuity in terms of practices. I presented the preliminary findings from this research project at the 29th Reconceptualising Early Childhood Education Conference held in the UK and the 12th KSECE International Conference Presidential Invited Talk held in Korea in September. I conducted the interviews using those two videos I edited with the preschool teachers in Niigata prefecture in January and in Arizona (USA) in March 2024. Next steps would be I am planning to finish transcribing all interviews I conducted, work on data analysis, then start writing articles.
