Due to the applicant's family circumstances and administrational work of the university, the project plan for this research had to be significantly changed. As a result, the applicant is no longer able to conduct the out-of-country survey during spring break, as stated in project plan (4) at the time of application. Since Keio University Academic Development Funds for Individual Research was to be used to cover the travel expenses for the spring survey, the final expenditure for FY2023 was zero. However, I was able to conduct research mainly in Bolivia and give a lecture on the monetary economy of the colonial Andes during the summer vacation (July 15-August 14: the research expenses were covered by the Ushioda Fund), and I believe I was able to achieve certain results. Specifically, I investigated documents related to counterfeiting in the mid-17th century in the Bolivian National Archives in Sucre and the Historical Archive of the Mint of Potosí. Although there were not many records that directly tell the story of the disruption of the monetary economy caused by the introduction of inferior quality coins, I was able to copy important documents for examining the characteristics of the monetary economy in the Andes during the colonial period.
In 2023, the 250th anniversary of the Potosí mint, the applicant was invited to give a commemorative lecture, "El panorama de problemas que rodearon la máquina de Potosí," during my research stay in Potosí. (a video of the lecture is available at https://www.facebook.com/cnmptsfcbcb) which was held on July 26. In addition to the Q&A session following the lecture, Carlos Contreras, a Peruvian economic historian, gave a lecture on the economic structure of the colonial Andes a few days later, which was particularly informative on the money penetration process in the colonial Andes.
These are the results of my research in FY2023. I am currently reading the documents collected during last summer, and plan to publish them in a paper entitled "Monetary Policy in the Seventeenth-Century Andes: The Case of Potosi during the counterfeiting Period (tentative)" (to be included in the Chuo University Humanities Series, "Aspects of the Early Modern Hispanic World," to be published in March 2024).
Although circumstances prevented me from having the opportunity to use the scholarship funds, I would like to express my gratitude for the ongoing support system for my research.
