Porous organic thin films have attracted attention in recent years due to their gas adsorption properties, which are useful for trapping contaminants and storing gases, as well as their expected catalytic properties. Our objective is to establish characterization protocols for these materials. To achieve this objective, we fabricate thin films and perform nanoscale structural characterization using scanning probe microscopy (SPM)-based experimental techniques. In the first year, we conducted the following four topics:
1)Nanoscale Analysis Using Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy: We obtained signals that would not typically appear in conventional macroscopic Raman measurements, discovering a violation of the so-called selection rule of vibrational spectroscopy. This is due to the localization of light at the nanoscale. A paper on this topic has been submitted and is under review.
2)SPM Combined with Local Infrared Vibrational Spectroscopy to Characterize Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films: Addressing technical challenges encountered previously, we have successfully elucidated the structures of metal-organic framework thin films at the nanoscale and obtained molecular vibrational signals. Apart from vibrations originating from ligand bonding between organic molecules and metallic ions, we have also detected signals indicative of non-bonded components, suggesting the presence of structural defects within the films. Nonetheless, some questions remain, such as the inability to attribute certain vibrational peaks.
3)Observation of Cluster Formation through Self-Assembly of Functional Organic Molecules on a Metal Substrate: While we anticipated thin film formation through molecular interactions, we discovered a highly unusual phenomenon where chain-like clusters and clusters made of multiple of three molecules were formed. We are currently conducting collaborative research to elucidate the reasons behind this through theoretical simulations.
4)Fabrication and Structural Evaluation of Amorphous Covalent Organic Framework Thin Films: Despite aiming for thin film fabrication, we observed particle-like structures. It is necessary to reevaluate the fabrication method.
In conclusion, depending on the molecules and fabrication processes, unexpected structures sometimes appear, but we are close to establishing the characterization of organic porous thin films using SPM combined with local vibrational spectroscopy.
