Cerebrovascular diseases, including cerebral infarction, are the second most common cause of long-term care in Japan, after dementia. Both atherosclerosis caused by arteriosclerosis and cardiogenic cerebral embolism caused by atrial fibrillation account for about 30% of cerebral infarctions, and a link with periodontal disease has also been reported in recent years. Although pharmacies are required to perform a health support function, reports on stroke prevention awareness are limited. This study examines the effects of health self-checks and information provision at pharmacy health support events on the awareness and behavior of local residents.
On 11-12 October 2023, glucose and lipid measurements, oral environment checks and electrocardiogram measurements were conducted at a health event organized by Keio University Community Pharmacy, together with information on the disease awareness and preventive measures for cerebral infarction. A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted.
Of the 48 participants in the health event, 47 who gave consent to cooperate in the study were included in the analysis; 98% said they would be willing to work on stroke prevention in the future; 32 respondents to the one-month follow-up survey showed an increase in stroke awareness. In addition, respondents reported improved exercise (26%), diet (25%) and oral care habits (35%) as a result of participating in the event. Furthermore, four months later (n=29), those who had not originally been in the habit of regular check-up had newly undergone a health check (30%) or a dental visit (42%).
Health self-checks and information provision related to stroke prevention at health events increased disease awareness and improved lifestyle and consultation behavior, suggesting that community pharmacists may be able to contribute to maintaining and improving the health of local residents through the implementation of health events.
