This study examines "Prisons and Gender in China from the 17th to the Beginning of the 20th Century," and attempts to clarify what kind of measures were taken in prisons where the mixing of men and women was inevitable in Ming and Qing Dynasty China, where the gender distinction was regarded as important. The purpose of this study is to clarify how the gender distinction was emphasized in Ming and Qing dynasty China.
This year, the second year of the three-year plan, the research proceeded in three directions.
(1) Female infanticide is discussed. One of the clues to considering gender in the Ming and Qing dynasties is the female infanticide, a reduction of newborn girls by dipping them in water and killing them. This year, I wrote a "Book Review: Rural Clerks and Infanticide: a Historical Study of the Village Control in Modern China by Eishi Yamamoto”, which was submitted to "The Historical Science (Shigaku)" Vol. 92, No. 1 & 2 and published in the journal. Female infanticide is deeply related to the theme of this study because the extremely skewed ratio of male to female population by female infanticide led to incidents involving women, which in turn led to women being jailed.
(2) The following is a study of “little daughter in law”. The practice was to take a young girl and raise her by her future husband's family, which had the effect of preventing female infanticide. This year, I collected historical documents related to the practice of little daughter in law and gave an oral presentation at the 8th Keio Sino logical Society Conference on "Little daughter in law in the Qing Dynasty: Focusing on Intellectual Families," In addition, I wrote and submitted an article, "Little Daughter in Law among Qing Literati," which was published in the 8th issue of the Bulletin of The Keio Sino logical Society.
(3) I have conducted research on the guan-mei, the subordinate officials who monitor women in prisons. However, I found that a newly published Chinese paper has already clarified a significant portion of the issue, and further research is needed before I can present original research results.
