The purpose of this study is to clarify the significance of Nos fils ("Our Sons" (1869)), written by Jules Michelet, a leading French historian of the 19th century, in the history of educational thoughts. In other words, it aims to reposition Michelet's educational theory, which has traditionally been interpreted only in the context of his theory of the fatherland in the formation of a modern nation, in a broader perspective and to clarify the themes of "education" and "action." These themes still need to be fully explained in contemporary evaluations, although they have been considered fundamental issues for Michelet.
In this study, the following points became clear.
First, the education that Michelet discussed in "Our Sons" was aimed at "the formation of the human self" with a view to "the whole of human life." Michelet's work was to reconstruct the history of education. That is to say, he tried to reform the man influenced by Cartesian rationalism and its consequence, abstract culture, by looking back on the past and present from the point of ''the child'' representing the harmony of life and having the power of creation or invention. We recognized in "Our Sons" an awareness of the common themes to "The People" (1866 reprint) and found it necessary to examine Michelet's view of education about both works. Regarding these points, we will continue to write the article.
Second, this study examined Vico's influence on Michelet in rereading the book around the concept of "action" to which Michelet refers. Indeed, Michelet notes that Vico's principle of the vital force, the principle that "humanity creates itself," created Michelet's book and his education. Since Michelet translated and published Vico's "New Science" as "Principles of Historical Philosophy" (1827) and also published "Selected Works of Vico" (1835), we proceeded with the prospect that both documents would allow us to trace Vico's influence on Michelet's concept of "action. " As a result, it became clear that the interpretation of the concept of "action" in Michelet's theory as synonymous with the child's spontaneity as described by Rousseau was unique to the pedagogy of the Third Republic. In addition, recent studies in the history of ideas have begun to shed light on Michelet's reception and critique of Vico's "New Science." A deeper consideration of these issues is necessary.
