In 2023, I conducted basic research on the concept of virtus in Thomas Aquinas and discussed its contemporary development. The basic research took the form of reading and translating into Japanese the section called Virtue Theory in Thomas Aquinas's Theological Summa. The Virtue Theory in Theological Summa is divided into two parts: "habitus," which begins in Part I-IIae, Question 49, and "virtus," which follows it, starting from Question 55. I have read the original Latin texts in detail and prepared Japanese translations of each of them. This work is ongoing, and Question 67 is currently being translated. Through this work, various features of Thomas' theory of virtue have been confirmed, but in addition, the unique orientation and worldview that "virtue theory" has in the first place is becoming increasingly clear through comparison with Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. This point provided a central perspective in discussing the contemporary development of virtue theory, which was another focus of the 2023 study. "How Religious God is Different from Philosophical God," published in June, takes the style of a book for young people, but for specialists, this book sheds light on religion and faith from a different direction, based on the worldview and values that virtue theory. Rather than viewing faith as a non-evidential assertion that is opposed to rationality, it proposes a new positioning of faith as part of a proactive and active approach to the world from the human side, rather than a mere passive one, as it questions what rationality is in the first place. The extent to which the nature of modern virtue theory is related to the spirit of ancient medieval virtue theory is a subject of current and future research.
