英語史研究において、綴字は伝統的な分野とみなされているが、個々の単語の綴字に焦点を当てた研究こそあれ、通史的な観点から英語綴字の全体像を見渡し、その歴史的変化について記述・説明した研究は多くない。本研究は、古英語、中英語、近代英語、現代英語の各時代の綴字を質的・量的なアプローチにより記述し、綴字体系を支えている原理や方針を明らかにしつつ、英語綴字史を記述することを目的としている。とりわけ綴字標準化の過程および語源的綴字の問題との関連で、後期中英語期から初期近代英語期にかけての時代に注目した。
本研究では、英語史の各時代の綴字体系の背景にある原理や方針を探り、それをつなぎ合わせて英語綴字史の通史を描くことを目指した。綴字体系は英語史を通じて変化と変異を繰り返しており、現代ですら完全なる一枚岩ではない。各時代の電子コーパスを用いた量的な調査と、写本や刊本に戻って生起環境を確認する質的な調査とを組み合わせて、各時代に特有の変化・変異を記述し、その要因を明らかにしようとした。とりわけ注目すべき問題として、後期中英語期から初期近代英語期にかけて生じた綴字標準化と語源的綴字を掲げていた。
本研究課題は3年間の期間を計画しており、本年度はその1年目だった。研究の進捗状況は必ずしもはかばかしくなかったが、来たる6月22日には近代英語協会のシンポジウムにて、中英語期から近代英語期にかけての綴字に関する研究成果を公表することになっている。
In the historical study of the English language, orthography has been assumed as an established field. It is true that individual spellings have been investigated, but little has been studied on the general picture of English orthography through time. This study aims to describe the spelling of each period of the history of English, i.e. Old English, Middle English, Modern English, and Present-Day English through both qualitative and quantitative approaches, elucidating the principles and policies underlying orthographic systems. Particularly, attention is paid to the period from Late Middle English to Early Modern English, which concerns the process of orthographic standardisation and the practice of etymological spelling.
The research sought to explore the principles and policies underlying the orthographic systems of each period and to integrate them to describe the overall history of English spelling. Orthographic systems have undergone repeated changes and variations throughout the history, and even in the Present-Day English period, they are not entirely uniform. By combining quantitative investigations using electronic historical corpora with qualitative investigations that focus on manuscripts and printed works, the present research aimed to describe the specific changes and variations of each period and elucidate their causes. Particularly notable issues include the orthographic standardisation and etymological spelling that were observed from the Late Middle English period to the Early Modern English period.
This research project is planned to span three years, with the current year being the first. The progress of the research has not been entirely satisfactory, but it is to be noted that on June 22, at the symposium of Modern English Association, the research findings on spelling from the Middle English period to the Early Modern English period are scheduled to be presented.
