In this study, the stability of a simple laser frequency stabilization method using a Sagnac interferometer is improved. By eliminating the birefringence within the interferometer, the long-term stability is enhanced.
The optical frequency of lasers fluctuates over a range of several gigahertz. Laser frequency stabilization is not only crucial for fundamental physics experiments such as high-resolution spectroscopy, ultraprecise atomic clocks, and quantum state control, but also holds significant practical importance in applications like high-density optical communication.
Laser frequency stabilization involves feedback to the laser so that its frequency matches the transition frequency of atoms or molecules. While there are various methods for the feedback system, using a Sagnac interferometer is extremely simple and highly accurate. In this study, the long-term stability of this method is improved by stabilizing the laser frequency using a polarization-independent interferometer, and the stabilized laser frequency is evaluated.
In the experiment, a semiconductor laser at 1560 nm is frequency-doubled, and its frequency is stabilized to the D2 transition of rubidium atoms. In conventional setup, the polarizations of the two counter-propagating beams in the Sagnac interferometer were orthogonal to each other. Previous studies have reported laser frequency fluctuations of about 1 MHz per hour. It has been concluded that the birefringence of optical elements inside the Sagnac interferometer is a determining factor in the stability of the laser frequency. In this study, the stability of the laser frequency is improved by aligning the polarizations and eliminating the birefringent optical elements inside the interferometer. As a result, the laser frequency fluctuations are suppressed to about 200kHz per hour.
