This year, I focused on researching the relationship between domesticity and sympathy in American women's literature. Specifically, my research tackled with studies on Catherine Maria Sedgwick's New England Tale (1822), published in the 19th century, and Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping (1980), a 20th-century work, on both of which I delivered presentations at literary conferences. When the discourse on public and private spheres in America was articulated by Alexis de Tocqueville's writings in the early 19th century, Tocqueville described the realm of women, or the "private," as the " the quiet circle of domestic employments," a "narrow circle." While this dichotomy between the dynamic public sphere and the static private sphere has persisted, can we truly consider the domestic realm as a quiet space isolated from society? In the research conducted this year, I aimed to reveal how "domestic novels" depicting family life have portrayed the challenges of maintaining a household, engaging in discussions about the role of sympathy within the family.
