This practical research project provided an educational opportunity for university students to learn and deeply understand the "intersectionality" of cultural differences and poverty and class issues through their experiences at support sites, as a service-learning education incorporating sociological fieldwork methodologies into participation in social contribution activities such as volunteer activities. University students who took classes taught by the principal investigator participated as volunteers in support activities for children and youth with foreign roots and backgrounds such as poverty, conducted by the following NPOs and others (April 2022-February 2023: once a week to once every other week).
(1) Learning support classes and after-school classes for elementary and junior high school students from families receiving public assistance and families with foreign roots, operated by the social welfare corporation Seikyu-sha.
(2) Activities to provide learning support for junior high school, high school, and university students with foreign roots and to create a place in the local community for young people with ties to foreign countries ("Tsurumi Yoru Kyositsu"), which the principal investigator operates in collaboration with Tsurumi International Lounge in Yokohama City.
(3) Japanese language and study support classes for high school students with foreign roots, conducted by the NPO ME-net on the campus of Kawasaki Prefectural High School.
The university students were actively and continuously involved in each of these activities and recorded their daily realities and experiences in field notebooks. They reflected on these through in-class presentations and discussions, and reinterpreted them through knowledge gained from the literature on the subject. Through group study, students synthesized their experiences and findings into written reports, presentations, and video recordings. Some of the deliverables will be made publicly available on the Internet.
Through these activities, the principal investigator was able to observe the process of university students acquiring academic knowledge of sociology and deepening it through dialogue with people in the field. This provided a good example of the use of fieldwork methods in service-learning education, and also presented a model for university-regional collaboration.
