本研究は、従来のアメリカ文学史からは取りこぼされてきた 19 世紀におけるアメリカ女性文学作品を、シンパシーとシスターフッドという観点から再考することを目的とするものである。従来、家庭性や感傷性を中心とした領域論(女性=私的領域、親密圏)という枠組みで論じられることが多かったアメリカ女性文学の中に、新たな観点による系譜を見出し、アメリカ文学史を再構築することを目標とする。
本年度は、 １９世紀後半の女性作家の中で、ケイト・ショパン『めざめ』やシャーロット・パーキンス・ギルマン『フェミニジア』の作品の中にみられる女性の自立と、社会的な規範との軋轢についてリサーチを進めるとともに、同時期に女性を主人公とした小説作品を執筆した男性作家であるマーク・トウェイン作品にみられる「自由意志」のあり方について研究を行った。作品としては、1895年に「ハーパーズ･マガジン」で連載され、翌年単行本として刊行された『ジャンヌ・ダルクについての個人的回想録』を取り上げた。本作は、歴史上の人物であるジャンヌ・ダルクの伝記という体裁を取っており、さまざまな資料を踏まえて執筆されたものであるが、若い女性という、トウェインの決して得意とは言えない人物をあえて主人公に据えたのはなぜだったのか、なぜ歴史上の人物であるジャンヌを取り上げる必要があったのかという問いを中心に考察した。本作では、一人称の語り手がジャンヌをいかに崇拝しているかが強調されているため、一見するとそこにステレオタイプ的な処女崇拝を見てとることが可能である。だが、ここで興味深いのは、トウェインがジャンヌの自由意志の問題に触れていることだ。ここでは女性の意思をどう捉えるかとともに、19世紀後半の宗教と科学の問題が浮き彫りとなっている。
本研究をもとに、今後はトウェインと同時代の女性作家におけるスピリチュアリティの問題についてリサーチを進める予定である。
The aim of this research is to re-examine 19th century American women's literature, which has been under-represented in traditional American literature history, through the lenses of sympathy and sisterhood. The objective is to create a new perspective on American literature by uncovering a genealogy within American women's literature, which has often been limited to the framework of separate sphere theory (women being confined to the private and intimate sphere) and centered on domesticity and sentimentality.
This year, investigated themes of women's independence and social barriers against it in such works as The Awakening by Kate Chopin and Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, among other works by female writers of the late 19th century. Additionally, I examined the use of free will in the novels of Mark Twain, a male author who wrote works featuring female protagonists during this period. Specifically, I wrote a paper analyzing Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, which was serialized in Harper's Magazine in 1895 and published as a book the following year. This work is a fictional biography of the historical figure of Joan of Arc, which was written based on various sources. The choice of Joan as the protagonist raises questions about why Twain selected her as the subject of the biography. What makes this work particularly interesting is Twain's exploration of the theme of Joan's agency and free will. The work also delves into the debate between religion and science prevalent in the late 19th century.
This study will serve as a foundation for future research on the theme of spirituality in female writers contemporaneous with Twain.
