今年度はコロナ禍によるオンライン授業対応に追われたことなどもあり、研究自体があまり進まなかったのみならず、この研究課題を共著にしてゆくと提案したリーダーの方からも何の連絡もない状態であった。従って、この課題についてはホッブズのテクスト、およびホッブズやトマス・アクィナスについての研究書を少し読み進めることができた程度であった。その中で、ホッブズ『物体論』における真理と、『リヴァイアサン』における真理の位置に若干のズレがあることは発見した。『物体論』は論証の規則に則ったものが真理だというオーソドックスな真理観を採っているが、『リヴァイアサン』では「裁定者」という概念を持ちだしている。したがって、「真理と政治的主権者の結びつきの強さ」は特に『リヴァイアサン』に強く見られる傾向であって、ホッブズのすべての哲学的作品がそうだというわけではないことに、留意しなければならないと気付いた。
とはいえ『物体論』においても、宗教的教義は哲学の扱う範囲ではないことは明言されており、ホッブズにおいて「真理が宗教から離れた」という私の当初の見立てが大きく崩れるわけではない。本研究のもとになった2019年のシンポジウム報告では、『リヴァイアサン』における権利／事実という区別が、「正統・異端」というパラダイムを脇に押しのけ、「公」を前面に出したことを指摘した。『物体論』における真理観が、権利／事実という区別にどう関わっているかは、今後明らかにしなければならない点であろう。また、今年度ほとんど着手できなかったトマス・アクィナスにおける教義と真理の複雑な関係についても勉強を進め、中世から近代における真理・宗教・哲学の関係性の変遷を少しでも明らかにしてゆきたいと考えている。
I could not make a good progress in my research this year because of the preparation for on-line class due to coronavirus. Moreover, the leader of this research project has not yet shown any schedule on this plan so far. Therefore what I could do this year was only to read a little of Hobbes's text and some commentaries on Hobbes and Aquinas. In the course of reading, I came to recognize that there is a slight difference in the plath of truth between in De Corpore and in Leviathan. In De Corpore, the criteria of the truth is whether a proposition follows a logical rule or not. However in Leviathan, the arbitrator decides whether a certain proposition is true or not. This means it is in Leviathan where the strong link between the truth and politics is particularly evident, not in all of Hobbes's works.
Even if I admit this, since Hobbes declares in De Corpore that religious dogma is not the subject of philosophy, my initial view that the truth is separated from religion is not far off. In the presentation in 2019, I pointed out that the Public comes to the fore and the religious orthodoxy is put aside by making a distinction between fact and right in Hobbes's system. What I have to do next is to clarify to what extent the truth in De Corpore support this distinction. Moreover, I want to try to study more about the complex connection between religious doctrine and truth in Thomas Aquinas, in order to see the transformation of the relationship between religion, truth and philosophy.
