漫画村の事件は漫画の海賊版の被害に注目を集めたが、同時に漫画の定額配信サービスへの潜在需要がある事を示した。海賊版対策としては海賊版を禁止することが良く唱えられるが、逆に似たサービスを合法的に提供し収益を上げた方が望ましいかもしれない。音楽においてはSpotifyをはじめとする定額配信が海賊版の抑制に成功している。同じことを漫画でできれば漫画作家・出版社にとっても、読者にとっても望ましい。これがビジネスとして実際に実現可能かどうかを調べた。結果として定額配信サービスは作家・出版社の利益を奪わず、むしろそれを増加させることができる。なぜなら、定額配信サービスによって、これまで漫画を購入していなかった人達までが、漫画を読むようになるからである。すなわち、漫画読者の裾野が拡大し、これによる増収効果が、紙の本の売上減少を上回る。漫画の海賊版対策としては海賊版規制より、出版社が自ら定額配信を行うことの方が望ましいだろう。

The Manga Village case drew attention to the damage caused by pirated comics, but at the same time showed that there was potential demand for a flat-rate comics distribution service. Though ban of piracy sites is often advocated as a countermeasure against piracy, but on the contrary, it may be desirable to legally provide similar services and make a profit. In music, flat-rate distribution such as Spotify has succeeded in suppressing pirated music. If the same thing can be done with manga, it is desirable for both manga writers / publishers and readers. This paper investigated whether this solution was actually feasible as a business. As a result, flat-rate distribution services do not deprive writers and publishers of their interests, but rather increase them. This is because the flat-rate distribution service allows people who have not previously purchased manga to read manga. In other words, the base population of manga readers has expanded, and the effect of increased sales outweighs the decrease in sales of paper books. As a countermeasure against piracy of comics, it would be better for publishers to start their own flat-rate distribution rather than regulate piracy sites.
