-In recent years, digital manufacturing has been disseminated, and an increasing number of non-experts are starting to be able to build small pieces of furniture or architecture. In Japan, this trend has been accelerated by disasters like the 2011 earthquake. In this research, we aim to develop specific methods for creating a digitally fabricated pavilion.
The conditions for the design are as follows: 1) Using a 3 axis CNC milling machine; 2) Portability; 3) Use of standard size materials in Japan; 4) Use of engaging joints. We built four prototypes under these conditions, and we realized two of them in real-scale. By comparing the prototypes and examining the real scale pavilions, we identify the advantages and problems of each pavilion, and we offer advice and discuss solutions.
Non-experts can use the results of our research and the specific details of our prototypes. These pavilions can serve to develop ideas for digitally manufactured temporary community centers or. We hope that the results will help contribute to the increasing knowledge of digital fabrication, including DIY methods, to allow communities to create their own spaces.
