本研究は、パレスチナ自治区ベイティン遺跡における考古学的発掘調査の成果を調査報告書として公表するための基礎研究を行うことが目的である。ベイティン遺跡では、その東南部にあるブルジュ・ベイティン遺跡からビザンツ期の大型教会堂と塔を伴う十字軍期の農業集落が出土しており、ワディ・タワヒーン周辺では移行期青銅器時代からローマ時代にかけてのネクロポリス（墓域）や大型貯水池や水車小屋などの農業施設群が確認されている。また、テルには青銅器時代からビザンツ時代の都市が存在したようであるが、それにはまだ手がつけられていない。
このうち、ブルジュ・ベイティン遺跡の教会堂は、40mｘ28mと大型で中央に特別な石を囲んだ記念聖堂がついていた。ベイティンは旧約聖書のヤコブが石を枕にして寝たところ天の梯子の夢を見た場所べテルと同定されており、この教会堂はその故事を特別に記念するために造られたものだったと思われる。また、十字軍期には農業集落の中心にこの教会堂が修復されており、ビザンツ期、イスラーム期、十字軍期の間にキリスト教がどのように発達したのかを知る上で非常に興味深い。
この調査の最終報告書（英文）を出版し、その成果を将来の研究に用いるためには、膨大な出土資料の体系的な記録と比較研究が必要である。それらがすべて完了しているわけではないが、本年度は特に遺構の報告の草稿を執筆し、それに伴う遺構図面の整理・トレース作業を行った。また、遺物の中でも土器、ガラス器、金属器などの整理・トレースを行い、土器以外はほぼ完了している。夏季には現地に滞在して倉庫に保管してある資料を直接確認する作業も行った。報告書の出版のためには、さらに石材、石製品、コイン、人骨、銘文資料などの資料化が必要である。
ただし、すでにあきらかになっている成果についての発表も行った。教会堂のユニークな遺構については、American Schools of Oriental Researchという西アジア考古学の代表的な学会で発表をし、好評を得た。また、今後のテル調査に向けてその課題をあきらかにする発表をパレスチナ考古学研究会にて行った。
The aim of this study is to prepare unearthed materials by Beitin excavations in Palestine for the final report. A large Byzantine church and the Crusader period agricultural settlement with a tower were unearthed at Burj Beitin, the site located in the southeast of the village of Beitin. A necropolis from the Bronze Age to the Roman period as well as various agricultural facilities such as a large reservoir is found along the Wadi et-Tawaheen, The cities from the Bronze Age to the Byzantine period are known at the Tell, although we have not excavated there.
The church unearthed at Burj Beitin is large (40m x 28 m) and contains an inner structure which surrounds a special stone. Beitin has been identified with the Biblical town of Bethel where the Patriarch Jacob slept on a stone and dreamed a dream of a heavenly ladder; this church can be commemorative of this event. The church was reconstructed during the Crusader period in the center of the agricultural community. This structure is significant, as it reflects the changing situations and nature of Christianity from the Byzantine, early Islam, to Crusader periods.
We need to prepare a large amount of materials for the publication of the excavation report. This year we focused on the structures, arranging and tracing figures. We also worked on pottery, glass and metal tools. We re-visited the site and store room during the summer in order to double-check unclear points. The works on building blocks, stone tools, coins, human bones, and inscriptions are yet to be dealt with.
We, however, already shared some of our results. I talked about the unique structure inside the church at ASOR meeting, and it was well accepted. We also discussed the issues related to the excavations at the Tell at the Japanese Society of the Palestinian Archaeology.
