本年度は以下の2点について研究を行った。1点目は、将来為替レートが通貨供給量、物価、インフレ率などのマクロ変数によって予測可能であるかについて、周波数領域の回帰分析であるバンドスぺクトラル回帰によってモデルのパラメター推定を行った。さらに、周波数領域についてビッグデータの分析にしばしば利用されるLASSOを用いることにより、より正確な予測が可能となるかについても考察を行った。この研究は科研費によって助成されている研究課題「バンドスペクトラル回帰分析を用いた為替レートと実体経済変数の関係に関する研究」（基盤C）と関連しているが、この手法を援用することにより、労働人口の変化が、理論モデルの帰結通りに将来の経常収支を予測しうるかの確認を可能にするために行った研究である。
2点目は特に新興国のモデルにおいて、経済開発援助が経常収支にどのような影響を与えるかを見た。ここでは、労働人口が外生的に動くことを仮定せず、援助が行われることにより内生的に労働需給が決定し、一般均衡を通じて経常収支にどのような影響が及ぶかを小国開放経済モデルを用いて分析を行った。仮定として、援助が生産性を上げるという外生変数の時系列過程を置いているが、これは途上国パネルデータによって正当化されている。結果として、援助は短期的には労働供給を下げるのみならず、消費が上昇するために外国からの借り入れが増加し、結果として経常収支が悪化することがわかり、これは観察されるデータともおおむね一致するものであることが分かった。このように一般均衡モデルを用いて分析し、さらに重要なパラメターはデータから推定されるものを持ちることにより、経済内部でどのようなことが同時、あるいは連続して起きているのかが明らかになるとともに、次の段階として人口が外生あるいは内生要因によって大幅に変動する場合への示唆を与えると思われるため、このような研究を行った。
My research focused on the following two problem. First, I investigated whether the future foreign exchange rate can be forecast by current macroeconomic variables such as the money supply, price levels, and inflation rates. To that end, I utilized the band spectral regression, which allows me to estimate model parameters utilizing some of frequencies. As for the selection of frequencies to improve the accuracy of forecasts, I used LASSO, which is often applied to big data. This study was in line with my research supported by KAKENHI that aimed to develop accurate forecasts.
The second problem was the impact of foreign aid on the current account. Here, with my coinvestigator of this second problem, I did not assume that the labor supply is purely exogenous. Instead, the labor supply was assumed to be endogenously determined after foreign aid is given. A small open economy model explained how foreign aid affected the current account in the framework of general equilibrium. Allowing foreign aid to raise the level of productivity, I showed that aid could lower labor supply and raise consumption, thereby deteriorating the current account. This explanation was largely consistent with the observed data for developing economies. One of the peculiar features of this study was that the key parameters of the model were estimated from the data for developing countries. The reason I conducted this study focusing on endogenous labor supply change was that my model could be extended to analyze the effect on the current account due to the change in either endogenous or exogenous labor supply.
