We conducted a questionnaire survey on effect of the piracy comic site "Manga village" and estimated how much amount of comic book purchase was reduced by Manga village. Because Manga village was exceptionally large as a pirated site, the sudden shut down of the site is thought to be a kind of natural experimental situation. We ask users of Manga Village to answer the purchase amount of one month immediately before the closure of Manga Village, and ask the same individual to answer the purchase amount of Manga after the next three months. By tracking the same individual, we can see the difference in purchasing behavior with and without a Mange village.
The first survey sample was 4806 people, of which 2857 replied at the second survey. Among the first respondents, there were 2986 comic readers and 1614 in the second. About 20% of readers use manga village. We applied difference-in-difference method. Treatment is people who used Manga Village and control is people who do not use Manga Village at all. As a result, sales increased by 14% after the shut down of the Manga village. Therefore, it is estimated that the purchase of comics decreased by 14% due to the Mange village.
This value may be underestimated. Firstly, three months may be too short for people to return to ordinary purchasing level. Secondly, people who once experienced piracy sites may continue to use other smaller piracy sites. In that sense, our estime is the minimum value.
