This research project considers how the literary style emerged in East Pwo Karen, which only has a relatively short story of writing language, and at the same time considers how a literary style emerges in a human language. The literary style of Pwo Karen is characterized by following three features: (1) the sentence final particle /law55/ appears frequently, (2) relative clauses with the relative marker appear frequently, and (3) elaborate expressions (= parallelism) are used frequently. As premises of our generalization, the following two points are assumed: (a) a writing language presupposes the presence of many readers and (b) politeness and ornateness are likely to be required in a writing language because it may be read in various situations including very formal one.
As a result of the research, the following has been clarified. First, the sentence final particle /law55/ is a form which is used in the colloquial style when a speaker speaks to a lot of listeners in order to express politeness. Since this feature satisfy both conditions (a) and (b), the particle frequently appears in the literary style. Second, using the relative marker in Pwo Karen is an old syntactic procedure which is nowadays becoming obsolete. Thus, it is considered to be a venerable expression and used in order to satisfy condition (b). Lastly, elaborate expressions, which might date back to the Proto-Sino-Tibetan stage, has an effect of making a writing more beautiful, as is general in the languages using this type of rhetoric. Thus, employing elaborate expressions satisfies condition (b).
The important point clarified in this research is that a long history of writing language is not always necessary for the emergence of a literary style. A literary style can be created by combining features of colloquial language.
