本研究では，自然発話に特徴的な言語のバリエーションを取り上げ，大規模コーパスを用いた数量的手法によりその特徴を明らかにした。具体的に，日本語における以下の二つの現象について分析を行った。
1. ら抜き言葉
「名大会話コーパス」を用いて，ら抜き言葉（例，見れる，食べれる）の話し言葉における特徴，具体的には，経年変化，出現条件などについて数量的に明らかにした。
2. 格助詞の交替
特定の述語では目的語を主格標示するが，これに加えて対格標示されることがある（例，太郎はりんご[が・を]好きだ）。これについて，「日本語話し言葉コーパス」「現代日本語話し言葉均衡コーパス」を用いて，話し言葉・書き言葉における特徴，具体的には，経年変化，出現条件などについて数量的に明らかにした。
これらの分析により，言語のバリエーション，および言語変化について，新たな知見を提供した。
This research project focused on linguistic variation that is widely observed in natural language. In particular, this study analyzed the following variable phenomena in Japanese, employing quantitative methods using large-scale corpora of spoken Japanese.
1. Ranuki (ra-deletion)
Using the Meidai Conversation Corpus, this study demonstrated the properties of ranuki (e.g., mi-re-ru, tabe-re-ru) in natural speech. The items that this study focused on include, for example, chronological change, and condition/contexts that can affect the likelihood of ranuki.
2. case-marker alternation
Using the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese and the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese, this study demonstrated the properties of the nominative/accusative case-marker alternations observed in particular predicates (e.g., Taro-wa ringo-[ga/o] suki-da) in natural speech. The items that this study focused on include, for example, chronological change, and condition/contexts that can affect the likelihood of alternation.
The results that the analysis of these two phenomena offered new findings about linguistic variation and language change.
