この研究課題では, 枢密院顧問官ニコラス・ベーコンが大学学寮などに対して奨学金や寄付金という形で与えた庇護の実態と, それによって形づくられることになる文人のネットワークについての解明がなされた。とりわけベーコンが文人クライアントを育成するためにケンブリッジのコーパス・クリスティ学寮に設けた奨学金制度に関する一次史料を基に, ベーコンが庇護した学寮の文人や詩人たちのネットワークを再構築した。その結果, 従来の文学研究者が着目してこなかった人脈ネットワークの広がりや継続性, 或いは詩人の創作に対する影響力を検証し, 庇護制度の総体を浮き彫りにした点が, 本研究の大きな成果である。
This study focused Sir Nicholas Bacon's patronage to his college scholars and fellows. By highlighting the documents relating to Corpus Christi College Cambridge, in particular, it revealed the mutual interdependence of his students, who had literary ambition and allied themselves with other members of adjacent chambers and colleges, with magnates of municipal corporations, and, furthermore, with government officials at court.
