本研究は, 従来のエネルギー概念史研究に見られる人文科学と自然科学との分断を解消することを目的としている。17世紀後半から18世紀にかけて, 英仏においてエネルギーの語が自然学の分野に導入されるプロセスの相違を明確にすることで, 自然に内在する力の原理をめぐる哲学的議論と接合させることができた。また, フランスで18世紀後半から18世紀初期にかけて隆盛したモンペリエ医学派の生命原理論に見られるエネルギーの語の用法と, 同時代の革命家の政治演説において多用されたエネルギーの語の用法が, ともに合理では説明のつかない根源的な力を示し, そこにある種の連動性が認められることを明らかにした。
The purpose of my research is to resolve the division between humanities and natural sciences commonly accepted in the traditional history of energy concept. First, from the latter half of the seventeenth century to the eighteenth century, by pointing out differences in the process of introducing the word "energy" into natural sciences in England and France, I successfully combined the differences with arguments made at the time about the active principle of nature's inherent power. Secondly, comparing the usage of the word "energy" found in the vital principle theory affirmed by the medical school of Montpellier, which prospered in France in the latter half of the eighteenth century to the early nineteenth century, and that widely used in political speeches of contemporary revolutionaries, my research clarified that both usages show radical power, which cannot be explained by rationality, and thus have some sort of parallel.
