| Abstract |
This article aims to trace the history of the first photography studios, at the end of the 19th century, in two towns of the Shonai region, in the Yamagata prefecture of Japan – the castle town of Tsuruoka, and the port town of Sakata.
The first local photographers are, for the most part, anonymous, but they played a very important role in the dissemination of photography. Images of theirs enable us to explore this region of north-east Japan more than a century ago, showing its urban landscape, its modernization, the disaster of the Shonai earthquake of 1894, and its people – those who attended the studios and posed for photographs. Together, the photographers and their subjects contributed to the creation of this valuable documentary record of their time.
